Think of your career as a masterplan

As landscape architects you’d know all about masterplans. They take a lot of time, hard work and careful development. Now think of your career as a Masterplan. It too requires time and energy. Fleetwood Urban’s Learning Sessions are here with a vision to help you complete your career masterplan.

Creative, knowledgeable and inspired are all traits of a successful landscape architect, but the ability to convey, tailor and sell the design is equally important, yet is too often overlooked. Training in the Landscape Architecture industry can be defined simply as ‘Growing and developing abilities in the art and practice of designing the outdoor environment’. This expresses the importance of not only design principles and techniques but also (and perhaps just as importantly!) business skills.

For this reason Fleetwood Urban has a vision to deliver professional training in a way that hasn’t been done before: business training tailored to Landscape Architects. The Learning Sessions began in 2016 and since then has travelled up and down the eastern seaboard bringing career-changing growth and development to hundreds of Landscape Architects. These sessions are intended to inform and enrich the industry with input from a range of skilled professionals that have the experience and knowledge to help improve your career.

Continuing this series of workshops, Fleetwood is pleased to announce a new engaging and interactive workshop, facilitated by Graham Fletcher entitled ‘Starting your own Landscape Architecture business’. AILA (Australian Institute of Landscape Architects) are the industry partner for Landscape Architects across Australia and have jumped on board with The Learning Sessions, having endorsed it highly and now partnered with Fleetwood to deliver these empowering sessions. With the endorsement of industry bodies as well as by prominent design practices around Australia, and with each workshop attracting CPD points, they have proven successful time after time.

The Learning Sessions are not however an over-convoluted “teacher-student” session, but rather a fun, interactive and highly engaging couple of hours, that are not only about essential skills and career-changing development, but also provide unique networking and social opportunities with fellow Landscape Architects.

As one recent attendee noted, “My colleagues and I really enjoyed learning about something so common to our profession yet so widely misunderstood. It was a great presentation, with many simple ideas that can be taken straight into business and everyday life”

Starting your own Landscape Architecture business

All new businesses have standard procedures for start-up. It is important to know what these are, but it is also important to become a new business owner with your eyes open.

Graham Fletcher started managing landscape architecture businesses in the 1970s and has started a number of his own businesses since then, with great success. He taught professional practice subjects at TAFE for 20 years and university for 10, and was Program Director of Landscape Architecture at UNSW. After retiring in 2015, he has been a consultant for a number of universities, and has been involved in volunteer work, including as National Chair for AILA’s Education Committee.

Fleetwood have another Learning Session coming to Sydney,  Saturday 9 September. For full details go to AILA website.
