The ribbon, at the centre of a new community
Like many of Stockland’s residential developments, The Address promotes a healthy and active lifestyle within a vibrant and inspirational environment. Located in Melbourne outer-western suburb of Point Cook, The Address is home to a new sculptural play experience undertaken by Fleetwood Urban. When commissioned to participate in the development Fleetwood Urban understood that The Address playspace would play a significant role within in its localised setting, as well as offer wider contributions at district and regional levels.
Fleetwood’s brief was to deliver an iconic sculptural steel play element to form the central spine of the development’s community park. The result is The Ribbon, designed by Spiire Landscape Architects. The sculptural play element features a variety of integrated landscape amenities, including basketball backboards, cantilevered shelter, and a selection of swings and play features. The sculptural steel ribbon also provides the framework for unscripted informal play and optional seating.
Fleetwood worked closely with Spiire to develop the concept of The Ribbon, from the sketch phase through to 3D modelling. An important part of the collaborative process was ensuring structural surety through to shop detailing, in order to guarantee that the design intent was maintained during the fabrication process and onsite delivery.
Robust safety considerations are the backbone of all Fleetwood projects. The Ribbon was designed to provide an elegant and sophisticated suite of shelter and play items that are both functional and beautiful. Material selection was a critical component in the success of this playspace, to ensure a stylish and robust product was delivered. Maintenance and durability were also key considerations, which were addressed through appropriate material selection and construction techniques – critical to the ongoing success and longevity of the playspace.
Fleetwood’s ‘philosophy of play’ believes unscripted and discovery play is an essential component of the development of healthy children. The play elements developed for The Address offer not only traditional play experiences but also present opportunities for users to interpret play in unique and individual ways. The Ribbon offers children the chance to assess and manage their own risk, and progress through the playspace at a speed and level appropriate to their individual confidence levels.
